Running in Kansas City is a great way to explore the city while at the same time, relieving stress and boosting your mood. If you would like to lace up your running shoes, the best destinations around Kansas City include:
Shawnee Mission Park
Spanning 1,600 acres, Shawnee Mission is a multi-use park that was dedicated in 1964. It’s the largest park in Johnson County and a sparkling 120-acre lake takes up the center. The park is a popular boating and fishing spot and is also a great place to enjoy a scenic run. The land north of the lake features most of the trail mileage. Runners can use a combination of bridal and hiking trails to fully loop around the water and pile on the miles.
Riverfront Heritage Trail
The Riverfront Heritage Trail is a bike and pedestrian pathway that stretches 15 miles. It starts at the river and meanders through the most historic parts of bi-state Kansas City. The trail’s mission is to improve quality of life in the community and to reawaken an interest in the region’s history.
The Westside Neighborhood Trail segment follows West Pennway. The lighting reflects the Spanish-American heritage of many residents, while a pedestrian bridge offers scenic views of Kaw Valley.
Loose Park was once the site of the Battle of Westport. Spanning 75 acres, the city acquired the land in 1927, and it’s one of the area’s most historic parks. Runners enjoy the beautiful scenery. And Loose Park is also home to Kansas City’s municipal rose garden. It features about 4,000 roses in 168 varieties and is a spectacular sight when in full bloom.
